Quilt shop opens in Kingman
Heritage Quilt Company, located at 232 North Main, Kingman, is now open Tuesday through Friday 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  Marti Evans is the owner and is a fourth generation quilter, beginning with her great-grandmother, who was an avid quilter, coming to Atwood from Germany and living in a sod home where Marti's grandmother was born and learned to quilt, eventually making quilts for each of her 26 grandchildren.  Marti's mother, who was born and raised near Gridley, and does hand quilting, has made quilts for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren to carry out the family tradition.
Attending quilting bees when she was very small was a day full of fun for Marti, playing with her sister under the quilts where the quilters worked.  As a young girl she spent many weeks during the summer on the farm with her grandmother who taught her to sew on a treadle sewing machine.  Marti has a special place in her heart for antique quilts as well as hand quilting.  Quilting just seems to be "in her blood."
Knowing that many of today's women work outside the home and are unable to find time for either quilting their own quilts or quilting bees, Marti recognized the need for long arm machine quilting which has become popular the last few years.  In 2004 Marti purchased a long arm quilting machine with a stitch regulator and took long arm quilting lessons so she could quilt for herself and for family members.
After living in the Goddard area for 27 years, Marti moved with her husband and one of her sons to Kingman County and resides southwest of Kingman.  Her other son lives in Wichita.
Very soon she realized a quilt shop was needed in this community and the idea for Heritage Quilt Company was born.  Marti enjoys helping people get through the monumental job of quilting so they can enjoy displaying the efforts they have put into piecing their quilts.  Another service she offers is the basting of quilts for hand quilters.
Heritage Quilt Company's wish is to provide the necessary products for experienced quilters of the surrounding area to produce the quilts of their dreams as well as sharing the knowledge of quilting with beginners.  Beginning quilt classes, classes on binding, and specific blocks and techniques are offered.  You will also find fabric, thread, and notions at HQC and are invited to visit the shop to create your own heirlooms of the future as well as cozy utility quilts to enjoy for everyday use.
